Email marketing: 3 Things you are probably doing wrong.

by

Having troubles with your email campaigns? You might be making one or more of these 3 mistakes.

Email marketing has been around for ages, yet we consistently encounter the same set of mistakes from newcomers, and albeit surprisingly, even from seasoned marketers alike! Keep reading to learn more.

Your headlines are too wordy

Your email titles should always be concise and catchy. When creating a powerful headline, always try to gravitate between 5 and 15 words. Shorter headlines can be confusing, and longer headlines can be wordy and unattractive. A catchy headline should be fun and appealing, but also informative. It’s important to explain what you are offering, and why you want the reader to click through. Let us explore this concept with two headlines – A “bad” one and a “good” alternative!

– The Bradshaw line has just gotten bigger now, with 12 new shoes added to our newest collection. Get them now for cheaper!

– Welcome to the family! Bradshaw introducing 12 new shoes at a mind-blowing price!

The first headline is not effective. There are too many words, and it is quite receptive (the word “now” even appears twice). It’s also long-winded and not ever attractive, due to the sentences being very long. On the other hand, the second headline is much better. It has a much more manageable word count and a more direct and excited tone. Compared to the first one, it also shows that the company is actually psyched about launching their new shoes, and this is why they offer them at a good introductory price!

Your emails read “spammy”

Even though you might not mean to spam your customers, poorly formatted emails might be considered spam because they look unprofessional.

One of the most common mistakes is the use of flashy fonts or colors. There is nothing more annoying than reading an email that has so many exclamations written in all-caps bright red letters just for added effect! In addition to that, some people might share content that simply lacks credibility. Loading your emails with fake testimonials is not a good way to genuinely appeal to the customers. Snake-oil salesmanship and perpetual sales are also lowbrow methods that are commonly associated with spammers.

You don’t understand your customers.

In order to create successful emails, you need to start from one key step. Understanding your customers. Without gaining a clear perspective on who your ideal clients are, it isn’t easy to actually promote content that they care about. If you want to make sure to tailor your emails to the right people, it is important to do some testing and research. Age groups, interests and many other factors will play a very important role in determining how to best approach people in your emails. In other words, you can’t show up at a corporate board meeting wearing a green mohawk, and you can’t go to a punk rock show dressed up like a wall street jokey!
