Dollar Shave Club

by

Replacement razor blades are notoriously expensive.  When we first married, we found ourselves in a Kmart store picking up some necessities.  We happened upon a clearance rack of my blades marked down from $14/pack of 4 to $4/pack.  We were on a strict budget at the time but we bought several packages.

I tend to use a razor blade for months.  I think I last changed my blade 5-6 months ago, but it’s finally on its last legs and my face is showing the bloody consequences.  4 years later I am down to my last package of clearance blades, and wondering what I’ll do when these run out.

I have heard of this website – the Dollar Shave Club that might work. I’ve also wondered if those infomercial blade sharpeners would be any good.  Costco has a little bit better price on the regular blades.  So there are several options – what do you do to save money on razor blades? Go with an electric shaver?

Find a double edge razor at an antique store or thrift shop and learn to use that. Replacement blades are very cheap and they give a better shave than modern razors. Straight razors give a better shave but the upfront cost and learning curve aren’t attractive options.

Dollar shave club blades work fine. The only issue I had with them is when they someone how were unable to charge my CC and never explained why. I also second the double edge razor. You can get a cheap handle and blades from amazon, http://amzn.com/B0050HO9MI . Soap works great with it. Add a nice badger brush to get a great lather if you want.

There are frequently deals on razors, but the blades are more expensive. If you have access to the sunday papers and the store flyers, you could just keep buying the beginning packs when they are a good deal, almost free with coupons, sales and rewards at CVS, RiteAid or Walgreens. But this only works if you are willing to do coupons.

We are on a schedule while we buy most stuff on clearance. Just keep an eye out and you may find another deal. Every time you are in a store – check the blade pricing. Second tip is just to used gift cards to stock up on stuff like that. I had a pile of free earned amazon gift cards so bought several years worth of razors for myself. Other than that I only buy them when I see them on sale (& then stock up).

I agree with the second edge razor. My husband switched over – the shave is cleaner and the blades are cheap! (He has also convinced two family members to switch and they are also converts.)

Unbelievable razors with unbelievable prices. Heard about them on NPR and my husband made the switch. He’ll never go back!

I second coupons+sales at drugstores…. I currently have a drawer full of razors, most of them were free. Fusion proglide, venus, “nicer” brands…. Check out krazy coupon lady’s website- they match up the coupons with the sales so you can find which store has a great deal

My husband shaves his head so he goes through a ton of them. I buy them on Amazon or Soap.com. He says the cheaper brands don’t work as well.

I’ve switched to the double edged razor. It’s better and you can get a relatively cheap razor on Amazon. Mine cost about $7.00 and I get the razors really cheap (and stock up if I see them on sale). They give a better shave. I also bought a cordless rechargeable shaver for those days when I don’t really want to shave but need to. Between the 2, I spend money on razors about once every 2 months.

Best thing to make the blades last forever is to make sure you COMPLETELY DRY the razor when you finish using it. I use my hair dryer for a second or two and dry the blades. Then store it out of the bathroom – in a linen closet works for me. Keep it out of the humid environment of the bathroom and it will last for ages. Try it – it works.

So, what do you think ?
